During Boston’s Milestone Celebrations, Contemporary Culture Emerges

Boston celebrated iconic anniversaries and historic moments during 2024. The city where a protest 250 years ago sparked a revolution that changed human civilization has continued to be a potent place for arts, academics, sports, and more. Contemporary highlights include:

  • The Greenway, an urban path that connects different neighborhoods across the city;
  • View Boston, which opened in fall 2023 and offers spectacular 360-degree views of the city;
  • And a culinary scene that embodies the diverse cultures of Beantown.

The Boston Public Library contains approximately 24 million items, making it the third-largest public library in the United States behind the federal Library of Congress and New York Public Library. At top, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum is on the spot where the historic protest took place. The event helped accelerate and intensify colonial support for the American Revolution. Fall Strolls and Landmarks Galore

Boston boasts 23 neighborhoods spread out across the city. The Back Bay district is the ideal place to take in the fall colors. It centers around Copley Square, and houses Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library (America’s first public library and the oldest free municipal library in the country), the Boston Public Garden (constructed in 1837 and is the oldest botanical garden in the U.S.) and Boston Common, the oldest public park in the nation, established in 1634. The Boston Athenaeum, one of the oldest independent libraries in the United States and a National Landmark library, has collected art and books since 1807. What better way to see autumn’s Picasso paintings of color than from View Boston, where breathtaking and orienting views can be enjoyed from high above the heart of the city. View Boston is inside the Prudential Center’s 52nd floor, one of the tallest buildings in New England. Curate your ultimate itinerary through the Explore Boston discovery tool. As you descend to the 51st floor, enjoy beverages at Stratus with even more spectacular views on the 360-degree open air roof deck and check out Boston 365, a 3D model of the city with projection-mapping to dramatically reveal the spirit of Boston.

Saunter through Boston’s iconic Beacon Hill, eye some of Boston’s TV and movie locations, like the place where everyone knows your name, Cheers Boston, located on Beacon Street and journey through American history along the Freedom Trail. Visitors can relive American history and transport back to 1773 at the Boston Tea Party Museum. The Boston Tea Party was an American political protest and tax revolt in which 342 chests of tea belonging to the British East India Company were thrown from ships into Boston Harbor by American patriots disguised as Mohawks. The Boston Harbor is where the famous event that forever changed the course of American history took place. Leaders such as Sam Adams, John Hancock, John Adams, and Paul Revere propelled the people of Boston into open rebellion, where an act of protest in which a group of 60 American colonists threw 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor to agitate against a tax on tea. Relive that event at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. Your experience starts in the Meeting House in 1773 where Boston’s rebellion began. Head outside and get a glimpse of life at sea aboard an 18th-century sailing vessel as you join a Son of Liberty and take part in the “Destruction of the Tea” where visitors throw tea into the very same body of water where the Boston Tea Party took place 250 years ago. Explore Griffins Wharf, see the reenactment in 3D along with the multi-sensory film, “Let It Begin Here”, which dramatically depicts the events of April 19, 1775, including Paul Revere’s famous “Midnight Ride” and the beginning of the American Revolution. The crown jewel is seeing the Robinson Tea Chest. Protected and preserved for more than two centuries, the Robinson Tea Chest is the only known surviving tea chest from the Boston Tea Party of 1773.

The Boston Tea Party is the single most important event that ignited the American Revolution. The anniversary of the Boston Tea Party is the beginning of commemorative anniversaries that will continue into 2026.

The Greenway urban walking route is an adventurous modern park that curves through the heart of Boston. In 1991, construction began on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, also known as the “Big Dig”. Recognized as one of the largest, most complex, and technologically challenging in the history of the United States, the project removed the elevated highway and created a tunnel system below the city. The city was enhanced by the public park that re-connected some of Boston’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods. The trail has several historical and interpretative markers, maps and art installations. The urban neighbourhood connector is a 17.4-acre trail that starts in Chinatown and ends in tbe North and West ends. Across from the iconic Boston Harbor Hotel, a Finnish wellness sauna with a cold plunge awaits. The saunas were sent directly from Finland and during winter the space is turned into a beer garden.

Let the season begin! Catching a game at Fenway Park is a must do from April -October, but when fall arrives it’s all about hockey and basketball, both of which can be enjoyed at TD Garden. The venue is home to the current NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, who clinched their 18th championship, the most ever won in NBA history and the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions, the Boston Bruins — one of the Original Six National Hockey League teams. The Bruins celebrate their centennial in 2024-25. December 1, 2024, marks the 100th anniversary of the club’s first game against the Montreal Maroons (December 1, 1924). The Bruins’ new uniforms include a commemorative centennial patch worn on the right shoulder that incorporates the team’s brand identity from the 1920s. TD Garden boasts an electric energy right at its entrance, where you’ll find a bronzed statue of one of the greats, Number 4 Bobby Orr. Once inside, the atmosphere explodes with emotions—Bruins’ and Celtics’ fans are notoriously passionate about their teams.
